Door Desk

Sometimes my husband thinks I'm a little nutty. I have lots of ideas and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.  I'm going to tell you, he did NOT like this idea.  I wanted to move my computer, etc. to the Living Room so that while I'm editing pictures and such I could still be part of the family.  Now I have a desk already but it's one of those metal corner computer desks and every time I sit at it I feel stifled!
So, not wanting to actually buy a desk I started thinking about ways to make one.  Back up to a few weeks ago, my mom asked me if I'd have any use for an old door (that she so lovingly calls the Dick Van Dyke Door because of the weird shape windows in it I guess) they were getting rid of.  She knows I like to make "trash" into treasure. Hmmm.  Long story short I rescued the door. Found these two awesome red file cabinets on good 'ol Craigslist for FREE and viola! A desk.  One problem, remember who didn't like it? Yep.  I moved it up to the spare bedroom, which in the end works just fine. Better even. All those wires and the big ol printer aren't really great for a living room, he was right. The girls gained a desk with my ancient laptop on it and they LOVE to type their letters.

Awesome?!  I think so. I love it. I still need to finish the wood a bit where I took the hardware off.  Oh that reminds me!  When you take the doorknob off it leaves the most perfect little hole for your monitor and keyboard wires.  I think doors are made to be desks, in their second life anyway!:)  The chair is from another set I got on Craigslist but that's for another post:)

what do you see?

...Update: After studying this little "beauty" in my house for a couple days, I've decided it needs to be recovered.  I can work with orange, but I can't work with the torn arms...

I figure I'm out nothing if it's a huge disaster except the 10 yards or so of fabric...

wish me luck! I've never reupholstered furniture before but I think this could turn out really really cool if it works!

Just look at this transformation this lady did!!!

check out this little gem

This little table has a funny story behind it. One Saturday morning the girls and I were playing in the family room and out of the corner of my eye through the window I saw some furniture sitting at the end of the neighbors driveway. On further inspection there was a "FREE" sign on it. Score.  There was a little brown sad looking table just waiting for someone to rescue it. Me!  My husband, however, did not agree nor share my enthusiasm.  Go figure. It took about an hour of begging and convincing him that "it's the perfect size and exactly what I've been looking for!" and threats to "just go buy the one hundred dollar one at NFM that I've been wanting" to FINALLY get him to take the walk of shame and rescue the free table.  He must have had himself all tense (I can't imagine why) because as he picked up the table and turned to walk home, out went his back.  Like, bad.  That night he was seriously in agony. Did I feel bad, yes, of course, but a couple trips to the Chiro later he's just fine....and so is this little gem of a table!  It needed some major TLC, wood glue and paint but I think it's perfect! Sorry dear.

Before (yes I got a little excited and forgot to take a picture before I started painting!)

oops

I will not be quitting my job to become a professional furniture refinisher, any time soon. I'm gonna need one more day before the big reveal as I forgot to paint a small detail. You know the space between the drawers, the wood that hold the drawers in place-that part.  I didn't think it would show, so I didn't paint it. I was all excited and was putting the drawers back in only to see white space between the drawers. OOPS.  Oh well, easily fixed. Sigh.

the before

This is my cute little Craigslist find for 20 bucks!  Hopefully it'll turn out half as great as my inspiration.

It's obviously still functional, but needs some major TLC.

Which is your favorite?

starting something new

My main blog was becoming cluttered once again with all the project blogs I love to read....so I moved them on over here and I'll be trying to post my projects and cool tutorials I see online.  Most of the time these projects stem from me seeing something and not wanting to buy it...so I do my best to recreate the original (in a legal way of course) and viola! Sometimes they turn out, and sometimes they don't, but it's always fun!

 THIS little beauty

is the inspiration for my first blogged project...coming soon(ish)!
